  • Thank you for visiting David Higginbotham Photography, The Blog!

I have been working as a professional
photographer in North Alabama and the southeast region for 14 years. I spent 7 years as a photojournalist and then worked 8 years as a photographer for NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.

It is very important to me to create the most unique and beautiful images
that I can for each of my clients. If it is possible....I care more
about your photos than you do!

I strive always to be professional and patient. There is no ego to sidestep. There is nothing but a 33 year old photographer with a love for God, his wife, his
family, his dog, and his photography.

Derek and Jessica’s Engagement Session

Huntsville, Alabama Portrait and Wedding Photographer

I first photographed Jessica and her two sisters way back in November of 2006. There was about a 25º wind chill that day. Eventually they started speaking to me again.

This time I was photographing Jessica with her fiance Derek downtown in Huntsville, Alabama. The weather was great this time but there was this nasty cloud of gnats that we kept having to fight with. This led me to the conclusion that nature hates Jessica.

The spot in this first picture is where Derek proposed to Jessica.

Considering my theory on Jessica and nature I was a little worried when I saw these geese flying overhead…..but luckily….they came and went without incident.

The Pierce Boys

I know the title sounds like I photographed a bluegrass group but nope…it’s my sister’s boys (as pictured below) Hayden, Cole, and Kacen.  I laugh when I think of these guys as teenagers.  I can’t put my finger on why…I’m just certain it will be funny.

Photobucket

We shot some long overdue pictures of the boys at my parents house a few weeks ago.

These guys kept me laughing the entire time.

I actually had one of those moments of clarity that will hit me as a photographer every now and then.  I was shooting pictures of three of my 5 nephews…sure…but I was also creating something that these guys will look back on one day as brothers.  It’s rare that we appreciate the importance of a photo when it is being created.  More times than none it takes drastic change to reveal the true value in an image.

The mailbox below belonged to Mr. Phillips who lived across the road from the house I grew up in.  When I was first taking an interest in photography I would take Dad’s Canon AE1 out and shoot pictures of things around our property.  For whatever reason….I shot a ton of pictures of this mailbox.  That mailbox and those little California Raisins they gave away at Hardee’s.

Not long after I took the photo above I asked the boys to smile.  Kacen….far left….decided that this was the smile he was going with.  After I cracked up the other two boys looked over and this is what that looked like.  I just thought this series was funny enough for an animation.  This picture below should be moving for you….

It’s always fun photographing you guys and I hope I have many more opportunities to do that as you grow up!  May you never realize that your Uncle Dave isn’t as cool as you think he is now.

Josh and Amy Engagement Session

Athens, Alabama Wedding Photographer

Josh and Amy are cramming a lot into the next 9 months.  They are finishing up pharmacy school….and getting married.  That means in 9 months we can all call them and ask if it’s okay to take a Sudafed with with a Benadryl if we’re on an antibiotic.  Come on admit it….we all do that to our pharmacist friends and family.

One thing that these two learned quickly is that when you are having your photo made in public people will slow their cars down and stare at you like you’ve got 3 heads.  I have adopted “the wave method” to counter this oddity.  When people stare….acknowledge and wave at them….it blows their mind.

Josh realized the public’s odd staring habit right about…….now (on left).

Josh was also advised on matters of love by a motorcycle gang as they stopped at a traffic light.  Just imagine all of the good love advice you’ve ever been given and add the word “brother” at the end of it.

David Higginbotham - Hey thanks man! I gotta give credit where it’s due though…that was Josh’s idea! I did trip the shutter though! :)October 18, 2009 – 8:26 PM

Decatur, Alabama Wedding Photographer - [...] Josh and Amy are both pharmacists.  So as usual I attempted to secure myself a lifetime supply of phenergan and zithromax.  These guys weren’t budging.  They kept muttering something about “legality” and “ethics.”  I really had a good time getting to know them both but the next time I am puking or have a cold that probably doesn’t even warrant antibiotics…I’m calling you Josh – night or day. The McElyea Family….ok….mostly Luke

Well it is that time of the year again!  Luke is three.

Let me tell you a story about Luke’s dad….Cory.  I’ve known him since we were in junior high school.  For almost all of that time he has been known to me and all our friends as Balki.  Remember Balki Bartokomous from Perfect Strangers? Well we thought Cory looked enough like Balki to justify the nickname….and it has stuck….man has it ever stuck.  In hindsight we now realize how little resemblance there was between him and the real Balki.  So…off to Balki’s boy…..

As a dog owner I was a little apprehensive about posing him beside of the hydrant but his parents reminded me that most of the time little boys won’t pee on things like dogs will.  You learn something new everyday.
