Some faces just need to be photographed. Other times it’s the personality that begs a portrait. On most occasions it’s a combination of the two. Such is the case with most of the residents of Sugar Creek. One day Anna and I will be part-time residents at Sugar Creek and to be honest I’m not sure I’m interesting enough to live out there.

I imagine that little dead-end road is a pretty good representation of a lot of dead-end country roads on the water. Everybody knows everybody. You drive up and down that road more than once and you aren’t a regular…you’re likely to be stopped and questioned. It’s community watch without the monthly meetings.

I’d like to photograph a lot more people at Sugar Creek and hopefully one day I will.

Portraits for Professionals – Decatur, Alabama Commercial Portraits

A few days ago I noticed a new billboard here in Decatur. The company had been running an ad for a while but this version was new and updated with a professional head shot. Even though I wasn’t the photographer who shot the new photo I found myself thrilled that this business had made the decision to replace the poorly lit, poorly posed portrait. The cost of a professional portrait session is a small price to pay when compared to the impression it will make on your existing and new customers.

The photos below are examples from a session I had earlier this year with a physician who needed some updated portraits to use for a professional organization.

More recently Leah Gradl with Thrive Business Development needed portraits to compliment her new website.

I’m working on a personal portrait project and last February my friend Dwight (1st image below) invited me to a poetry reading in Huntsville, Alabama to see if I could add to that project. It was a great event and I shot a ton of portraits. There were three that really jumped out as my favorites though.

Jennifer – College Senior Portraits – Florence, Alabama

Jennifer wanted some portraits to document her graduation from college at The University of North Alabama. Now since this was back in November of 2010 Jennifer is certainly already working as a nurse and has probably been promoted a couple of times. Yep…this post isn’t exactly timely. So as you look at these photos let’s all just pretend that it’s not 112˚ outside.

Happy belated graduation Jennifer. :)

Heather, Bear, and Beau

Heather, like Anna and I, treats her dogs like children. We can completely relate. As I type this my “son” is laying in the corner of the living room sulking because I ate a biscuit and didn’t give him any.

This is Beau….

This next photo makes me laugh every time I look at it. It’s not a perfect photo of the pups but it is a pretty good representation of their personalities.

Harry Hames

Sometimes I decide that someone needs to have their photo made. I may showcase those images on this blog from time to time. If for no other reason than to tell their story…even if it’s a painfully brief version.

This is Harry Hames….

Harry has chosen to dedicate a huge percentage of his time to helping the people of Haiti recover from the earthquake that struck early in 2010.

I’m not going to try and write an article on him as I know it would be inadequate. Here is a link to a local story about the work Harry does there if you want more details.

If you know Harry tell him thank you for the work he does. If you don’t know Harry look around you and find someone who does dangerous, thankless work all in the name of helping others and tell them thank you.

Anna – My Beautiful Wife – Decatur, Alabama Portrait Photographer

Every now and then I ask Anna to sit for a portrait. Usually it’s because I have something I’m wanting to try and this time was no exception. She’s never thrilled but she almost always agrees to help. My initial efforts failed pretty spectacularly but just before I gave up for the night I saw this image. It’s not within 100 miles of what I set out to do. But I was a little ticked off that my first idea didn’t go well and I was simply being stubborn about getting something out of our time….so I kept shooting. I’m sure there’s a lesson in there somewhere.

Thanks for being patient with me dear….in photography….and in life.

The Phi Mu Superfriends – Alabama Portrait Photographer –

A couple of years ago almost all of Anna’s college friends were actually going to be in the same town at the same time. This is a pretty rare occurrence since they all live all over the country. They have such a hard time getting together that I have jokingly told Anna that if they could actually all get their schedules together for a trip I would pay for it. I love them all but I kind of find myself hoping they stay busy….that would be expensive. Anyway….we thought it would be a good idea to shoot a group photo since we had so many together. I guess I should apologize to Lindsey….she was in Texas and couldn’t make it to this meeting of The Phi Mu Superfriends (my nickname for them…not theirs). I guess if you all get together again not only will I have to pay for it but I’ll have to take another picture.

By the way I just started to be cool and type out an abbreviation of the name of their group…not a good idea.

Briana Dean

Briana Dean is an extremely talented singer/songwriter. Don’t believe me? Watch the video below and see if you aren’t singing this song the rest of the day! If you’re like me you’ll also find yourself singing it and pounding the wall (see 2:40). Just joking Briana….but seriously….I did that. :)

I love that quote from Zack. Zack is the beard and the brains behind the One Light Workshop.

My friend and fellow photographer Bailey Eaves let me know about a little get together of local photographers to work on off camera flash techniques a few weeks ago. Due to some unforeseen circumstances we couldn’t shoot at a nearby indoor location as planned so the shooting all took place out on Bank Street in Decatur, Alabama. Several of the photographers had arranged for some models to come for us and it turned into quite the geek fest (myself included) right there on the street.

Zack’s quote is a pretty simple idea but it is extremely important. Shooting with a flash on camera is like getting up before daylight….you should only do it if you have no other choice. :)

I cheated a bit on these next two. I did light Caitlyn with off camera light…but it was from a reflector being held at camera left.

This cute little thing wasn’t technically there as a model….her mom Autumn was….but we all had a hard time resisting those blue eyes.

…this is Autumn….and that is a dumpster behind her.

I cheated again here….this one below is all natural light with a reflector in front.
