Merry Christmas!

Good evening everybody!! Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?

As Anna and I sit here watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation I thought it would only be appropriate to wish all of you the hap hap happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with a guy I had to Google because I’d never heard of him.

Here are both sides of the 2011 Higginbotham Family Christmas card. I think next year I’m going to put Anna and Wilson on the same side so people don’t have to debate which side to display. Of course that will leave me awkwardly by myself on the other side.

Thank all of you who helped make 2011 another great one for David Higginbotham Photography!

Altf Session with Dalisa and John Michael Cooper

This past August Anna and I went to Las Vegas. Anna had been before but it was my first time. I thought it would be cool to have some photos of us made while we were out there especially considering how unique the terrain is compared to what we are used to here in North Alabama. I didn’t have to do any searching…I knew exactly who I wanted to do it. The amazing John Michael Cooper of Altf.

It was great getting to meet both John and Dalisa. They taught us about Vegas and the desert and we taught them about Alabama. This trip was one of the best ones that Anna and I have taken since we’ve been married and this session was big part of it! You can see their blog post about our session here.

I specifically asked for JMC (I only call him that because when I asked if I should call him “John” or “John Michael” he gave me the same answer I give people when they ask me if they should call me “David” or “Dave”)…anyway…I specifically asked him to shoot one of his signature Single Flash, Multiple Frame images. Notice the random desert bone on the wood to the right. That was included for our benefit and to also creep us out a little.

So the dry lake bed they took us to felt like being on another planet. It was so cool especially to someone who grew up surrounded by red clay and pine trees.

So after a quick change we headed to the strip for a few photos on one of the many pedestrian overpasses they have there. This guy was passing out advertisements for some sort of dance club and was trying to get me to “take my pretty lady out to dance.” To this day I’m not sure why I said what I did but the first thing out of my mouth was “I can’t dance…I have a wooden foot.” Seriously….I have no idea where that came from or why I said it but I stuck with it. For those of you who have ever seen me dance you are probably thinking “I KNEW IT!”

After that we headed down to the famous Las Vegas welcome sign and finished off our evening.

When the beat calls….you gotta answer.

So during Derek and Jessica’s reception I’m shooting away…minding my own business….when out of nowhere during a dance circle I am called out. Not in a way where I could ignore it and keep shooting but in a direct “Hey Higginbotham….show us how awkwardly you can dance!” How do you say no to that?

I couldn’t just dance. “But Dave….your dancing is more than enough.” Sure it is. But being a photographer I had to document everyone’s reaction to my skills.

This guy on the right…red tie….he is responsible for the dance call out. I’ll see you in November brother….and there may or may not be payback.

I’m not sure what this guy’s face on the right means but I’m pretty sure he was emotionally moved by my dance. We were all moved.

Cookie Logic Interview

A couple of months ago I was asked by the local television show Cookie Logic to come on as a guest and talk about my business. As always during any sort of public appearance I put 95% of my effort into not embarrassing my wife. I’m not saying I embarrassed Anna….but I did have to clarify that I’m not a child predator. Mortified might be a more appropriate word.

We’re #4!…We’re #4!

Ok so most folks don’t brag about being #4 in anything but I’m going to! First I want to thank all of you who took the time to vote for me in the WHNT Best of the Tennessee Valley competition. There were so many incredible photographers in the category for Best Photographer and I feel fortunate that so many of you thought enough of DHP to give me your vote!

There were 38 studios entered so I feel pretty good about #4! I’m sure I wasn’t Anna’s first choice either but you see how well that has worked out for me! :) I do hope I wasn’t her 4th choice….that would have actually made me sad.

Remote cameras at weddings – Huntsville, Alabama Wedding Photography

I always have a second photographer with me at weddings. The overwhelming majority of the time it is photojournalism superstar Gary Cosby Jr. We work hard to capture all the emotion and character that presents itself during a typical ceremony. Sometimes we feel like we are doing the job of 3 photographers and sometimes we actually are!

These are some photos from a wedding that Cosby and I shot a couple of years ago in Athens, Alabama. We knew that there would be a great vantage point from the upstairs balcony of the house at Madelyn’s in the Grove. We also knew that we would be hard pressed to actually get up there and shoot during the ceremony. So we put on our newspaper photographer hat (which if you are Cosby looks like this) and decided to utilize a remotely triggered camera.

This isn’t something we do at every wedding because truthfully it’s not always necessary…but at times it can really make a difference!

If I would have been running up and down stairs at this particular venue I would have risked missing the moment below.

I was thrilled when the good folks at Collages.net wanted to feature David Higginbotham Photography on one of their recent blogs highlighting a photographer who uses their services. If you are a current client you are familiar with Collages.net because that is who hosts your gallery after a session or a wedding. I have been using them for several years and love the service they provide. It’s very important to me to make sure that all of the products I provide for my clients are of the highest quality and feel like I have that with these guys. As if that isn’t enough….their customer service is probably the best I have ever experienced.

We Are Not SecurityHuntsville, Alabama Wedding Photographer

Well I know it’s been a while since I teased this post but better late than never. I’m sure so many of you were sitting around distraught because I hadn’t finished my thought. Well today is your day!….also….you may want to get out more. :)

When Cosby and I were photographing Matt and Pooja’s wedding Coz was shooting from his usual “Stalker Like” perch near the front and I was at the back. We were both shooting the bridal party as they entered and I later realized that he had a little better view of the scene than I did. Not normally a problem except for the fact that my goofy head was in some of his shots because I didn’t realize I was in his way. It wasn’t a major problem for their wedding but I wanted to take steps to remedy that for our weddings in the future so we have began using radios to communicate while shooting weddings.

I had considered doing this earlier but I was hesitant because I didn’t want to look like Jennifer Lopez from The Wedding Planner…..I don’t have the back side to pull that look off anyway. But I was seriously concerned about looking like a couple of weirdos and drawing attention to ourselves. But I was able to find some very subtle ear pieces that allow us to keep in (quiet) communication during the ceremony so the bride and groom have more photos of their memories and less photos of my backside.

I hope I never have to reference my back side this many times in a blog post again.

Website update!

Well hopefully all of you have made your way over here to the new blog from the old one. But davidhphotography.com has also been updated! There are some new images in the galleries and the images are bigger! Another feature I’m excited about is the full screen option. Here is a screen grab that shows you where to click within those galleries.
