I love that quote from Zack. Zack is the beard and the brains behind the One Light Workshop.
My friend and fellow photographer Bailey Eaves let me know about a little get together of local photographers to work on off camera flash techniques a few weeks ago. Due to some unforeseen circumstances we couldn’t shoot at a nearby indoor location as planned so the shooting all took place out on Bank Street in Decatur, Alabama. Several of the photographers had arranged for some models to come for us and it turned into quite the geek fest (myself included) right there on the street.
Zack’s quote is a pretty simple idea but it is extremely important. Shooting with a flash on camera is like getting up before daylight….you should only do it if you have no other choice. :)

I cheated a bit on these next two. I did light Caitlyn with off camera light…but it was from a reflector being held at camera left.

This cute little thing wasn’t technically there as a model….her mom Autumn was….but we all had a hard time resisting those blue eyes.

…this is Autumn….and that is a dumpster behind her.

I cheated again here….this one below is all natural light with a reflector in front.

Thank you Bailey for the invitation!!

Gary Cosby Jr - Dave, no does dumpsters better than you! Seriously though, those are just awesome portraits. I really don’t see how anyone else in Decatur has any business at all. I shoot with you all the time and I don’t know how you do it even when I am standing there watching. These are really nice. Well done my friend.December 8, 2009 – 8:36 AM
David Higginbotham - Hey thanks man! I really do appreciate that! I should start a portrait series called “Dumpster Divas”. It’s a working title.December 12, 2009 – 9:42 AM
Christy - David,
I LOVE your work!! Your pictures are just absolutely AMAZING!!I have a question about some of you guys getting together to talk about flash techniques. Is this something that happens often? I have been doing photography for about 3 years now and I have sooo many questions. It is so hard to find help. Do you have any suggestions for local workshops? Thank you so much.January 5, 2010 – 7:36 PM
David Higginbotham - Hi Christy!
Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate it!
That little get together was a first for me. I’m not sure if they plan those very often or not. I can give you a good resource though for learning about off camera flash. http://www.strobist.com is a bottomless pit of information when it comes to off camera lighting. Start with Photo 101 http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html David Hobby is one of the best when it comes to teaching those type techniques!
I hope this helps!

Max Surikov - I love Zack’s as well as Ed Pingol’s stuff. Off camera flash, when done right is downright magical. I tend to shoot with some kind of flash almost 95% of the time. It makes my images stand out from the 80% of photographers who rely exclusively on Available light. is awesome.May 31, 2011 – 11:43 PM
